Will you use Public Transportation? If you are going to rely on public transportation, then try to find a hotel in the Hollywood Entertainment District, in Universal City, in downtown L.A. or somewhere near a Metro Red Line train station. It's easy to take the Red Line between Universal Studios, Hollywood Boulevard and downtown L.A. You can take guided tours from Hollywood that cover most of the attractions that cannot be reached by train. Also, many guided tours pick up and drop off at hotels in Hollywood and other nearby areas.
Central to Most Attractions: If you have a rental car then there are more options. West Hollywood and Beverly Hills both offer a central location from which to visit most of the attractions. You will be within easy driving distance from Hollywood, Universal Studios, The Grove, Beverly Center, Miracle Mile, Getty Center, Santa Monica and other attractions. West Hollywood is where you'll find Sunset Strip, home of several popular night clubs that feature music and comedy acts. Both Beverly Hills and West Hollywood are generally nicer neighborhoods than Hollywood and downtown L.A.
Near the Beach: Two great choices are Santa Monica and Marina del Rey. Santa Monica has more attractions and a more comprehensive public transportation system that reaches into much of Los Angeles. Marina del Rey is closer to LAX airport. Both communities offer easy access to freeways.
Convention Center: If you are in Los Angeles to attend a daytime event at the Convention Center, then your best bet is to stay nearby. You can save some money by staying in a hotel just outside of downtown L.A., near a Red Line train station. If you want to stay outside of downtown L.A. and commute to your event in the morning, allow an extra hour for traffic and the long line at the parking lot of the Convention Center.
LAX Airport: If you want to stay near LAX airport, there are quite a few hotels within a few minutes' drive. Other good options in the area are Marina del Rey and Culver City.
